Amid rising cross-border tensions, the Centre ordered a coordinated blackout drill to be carried out on Wednesday to prepare citizens for potential warlike scenarios. Several cities across the country including Jodhpur plunged into darkness on the night of May 7, as authorities carried out the drill.
The 15-minute lights-out exercise, observed across multiple regions, was intended to familiarise civilians with blackout procedures that could be crucial during aerial threats in times of war. In Jodhpur, homes, businesses, and even wedding venues went dark at the sound of the siren. Streets, momentarily frozen in eerie silence, saw motorists switch off engines and halt wherever they were, adhering strictly to the protocol.
One poignant scene unfolded at a local wedding ceremony where the festivities were interrupted by the blackout siren. Without hesitation, the groom personally turned off all lights and paused the proceedings.
Wearing his ceremonial attire, he tied his sehra (the traditional wedding headgear) by candlelight and waited silently for the signal marking the end of the blackout. Guests later applauded his sense of civic responsibility, calling the moment “unforgettable.”
More than just a ritual, it was a reminder that preparedness and discipline matter, remarked one guest, adding that even in joy, one must stay alert.
The drill was a response to growing cross-border tensions with Pakistan and was meant to prepare the population for emergencies such as air raids, during which total darkness can help conceal urban areas from enemy aircraft.
Across Jodhpur, neighbourhoods slipped into complete darkness during the exercise, with many residents participating voluntarily.
