Sushant Kushwaha, a resident of Purnia district in Bihar, delayed his wedding ceremony to join the nationwide mock drills organised amid India-Pakistan tensions.
As the government authorities organised mock drills to test civil preparedness, Kushwaha didn’t shy from putting even his celebrations on hold.
According to a report in NDTV, Kushwaha was to lead the baraat procession and leave home at 6 PM on Wednesday, May 7, towards the bride’s house, which was 40 kilometres away in Araria.
But the man was nowhere to be found, for he was away taking part in a two-hour mock drill exercise instead. Kushwaha said he told his family members about his decision to join the mock drill a day before the wedding. Purnia was one of the 244 districts selected in Bihar for the civil preparedness security drills.
“It is my wedding today, but that is not the only reason why I feel elated. Today, the Indian Army entered Pakistan and launched missile strikes on their terror bases. It is a proud moment that I am able to be a part of the drill,” Kushwaha was quoted as saying by NDTV. Once the mock drill was completed, the groom returned home at 8 PM and headed the baraat to the bride’s place.
While Kushwaha’s act may have come across as strange, the Purnia man saw nothing abnormal about it, stating the nation always came first and that he took inspiration for the move from the Indian armed forces. “Soldiers often leave their wedding venue to go and fight at the borders. If the situation demands, we will also do that,” Kushwaha said.
As part of Operation Abhyas for civil defence, the Indian government authorities organised a range of security drills, providing civilians training experience of simulated air raids, rescue operations and other emergencies. These mock drills came on the day the Indian army carried out a strategic retaliation act against nine terrorist camps based in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK) to avenge the innocent lives lost in a terrorist attack in Pahalgam last month.
