The 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been “suspended indefinitely” amid turbulence over the military escalation between India and Pakistan. The decision was taken a day after the match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals was called off midway in Dharamshala. The stadium is located less than 100 kilometres from Pathankot, where sounds of explosions and air raid sirens were heard on Thursday night. When the first innings was underway, the floodlights of the venue abruptly turned off, leading to panic among fans.
The BCCI has decided to suspend the rest of IPL 2025 due to safety issues. Several overseas players and coaching staff are willing to leave India as early as possible. Australian media had earlier reported that their cricketers were worried about the situation and were “ready” to return home.
“We have decided to indefinitely suspend the IPL. The players’ safety is our utmost priority. Hence, we decided to stop the tournament for now. We’ll decide later if and when the tournament can resume. Right now, national interest is of utmost importance,” sources close to the Indian cricket board told the Hindustan Times.
While many fans have supported the decision made by the authorities, some were left heartbroken by this sudden suspension at the business end of the season. “It’s time to stop IPL fans wars and remove IPL profile pics,” read a post on X (formerly Twitter).

A fan has praised the BCCI for their prompt action as “nothing is above the nation’s interest, and the foreign players should leave for their home country immediately.”

Many users felt Chennai Super Kings fans would be the “happiest” to see the IPL being suspended, considering their poor performance this season. Meanwhile, the franchise dropped a social media post, saluting the Indian Armed Forces, with the title– “Nation’s First. Everything else can wait.”
On the other hand, many fans of Royal Challengers Bengaluru appeared to be disheartened as they hoped their favourite team to win the first IPL title this season. They are second in the current league standings and look almost certain to reach the playoffs.
“Even a divine force can’t make RCB win the IPL trophy,” quipped an X user.

In the same context, a cricket enthusiast shared, “I was only following RCB matches for Kohli and wanting them to win this time. Had started following IPL after more than a decade.”

Here are some other reactions:
Not saying this as a RCB fan but suspending IPL was such a cowardly decision.Easily could have completed it in south states considering almost 70% of the league stage matches was completed.— Adarsh (@Adarsh2028) May 9, 2025
Lucknow Super Giants were set to host Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Ekana Sports City on Friday, May 9. Following the suspension announcement by the BCCI, the match will not be played anyway. A total of 16 matches, including three Playoffs and the final, remain pending this season. The tournament may be resumed once the situation is under control.
